Help! Tried to unscrew the bulb, but a lower metal part of the bulb is stuck in the light and do not leave!?

If anyone can make suggestions, I really appreciate it! I have a pendant that plugs into the ceiling. The bulb burned and went to change it. I tried unscrewing the bulb, but seems to be blocked. Next thing I knew, the glass bulb to loosen by hand – but the bottom of the bulb, the metal part to thread is still trapped inside accessory! I have a pair of pliers and tried to grab the edge of the metal bulb, trying to loosen, but it will not work. Have someone Once he has been in this situation and there is a trick to get some light bulb? I was wondering if I sprayed WD-40 on it, could come loose, but do not know if this would be a fire hazard. I hate losing this fixture but I think if all else fails you can replace it.

Forget about the clips. You need a needle nose pliers. Sure that the light is off and the switch is off. Use your needle nose pliers and spread within the open base and try to unscrew this way. If you're lucky, you get some rotation and slowly. If you do not start tearing the edge of the base in a RIP and unscrew the motion. It will take some time, but eventually breaks the ball as it comes. If you break the plug does not feel bad, they are cheap to replace.

 17th Street

17th Street

$13.98

Bay Area progressive metal outfit Hammers of Misfortune’s fifth outing brings to mind classic Deep Purple, Queen, and Judas Priest as filtered through Dream Theater’s kaleidoscopic art rock lens. Led by guitarist/lyricist John Cobbett, 17th Street juggles power metal clich? s, classic rock melodies, and doom metal breakdowns with equal aplomb, managing to circumvent any kind of eye rolling through sheer determination and earnestness. Key cuts include the weary, vaudevillian ? The Day the City Died? and the blistering title track, the latter of which opens with a pair of crucial duel leads before launching into a brutish mix of Queens of the Stone Age and “Starship Troopers”-era Yes. Eclectic? Absolutely, but it never feels contrived, and when all of the disparate parts successfully align, as they do on the breathtaking Big Country-meets-Iron Maiden-inspired single ? The Grain,? it? s like randomly spinning the dial on the radio and landing on your favorite song. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi

 Edward Scissorhands [P&S Special Edition]

Edward Scissorhands [P&S Special Edition]

$14.98

Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands opens as an eccentric inventor (Vincent Price) lovingly assembles a synthetic youth named Edward (Johnny Depp). Edward has all the essential ingredients for today’s standard body, with the exception of a pair of hands. For what is initially thought to be a temporary period, he is fitted with long, scissor-like extremities that, while able to trim a mean hedge, are hardly conducive to day-to-day life. When the kindly inventor dies, however, Edward is left lonely and cursed with some very heavy metal for hands. He is eventually taken in by Peg Boggs (Dianne Weist), an Avon lady who takes pity on him after seeing his bleak existence. Edward, in spite of his inherent ability to slay anyone he comes across, is a gentle soul whose only wish is to be loved. His impromptu family has, at best, a limited understanding of Edward, but he finds himself drawn to Peg’s weary but sympathetic daughter, Kim (Winona Ryder), who is dating Jim (Anthony Michael Hall), the neighborhood bully. Meanwhile, Edward finds himself a local celebrity after the town realizes that his talents include creative hedge trimming and an unrivaled ability to cut hair. His so-called friends are proven fair-weather when Edward is accused of a crime, after which his only supporters are Peg and Kim. ~ Tracie Cooper, Rovi

 Fire of Unknown Origin

Fire of Unknown Origin

$7.99

Who would have thought that in 1981, after a pair of limp, unfocused studio offerings, and two mixed — at best — live outings, that the once mighty Blue ? yster Cult would come back with such a fierce, creative, and uncompromising effort as Fire of Unknown Origin. Here was their finest moment since Agents of Fortune five years earlier, and one of their finest ever. Bringing back into the fold the faithful team who helped articulate their earlier vision, producer Sandy Pearlman, Richard Meltzer, and Patti Smith all helped in the lyric department, as did science-fiction and dark-fantasy writer Michael Moorcock. The band’s sound was augmented by a plethora of keyboards courtesy of Allen Lanier, but nonetheless retained a modicum of its heaviness, and the sheer songwriting craft that had helped separate the band form its peers early on was everywhere evident here — especially the gloriously noir-ish Top 40 single “Burning for You,” written by Meltzer and guitarist Buck Dharma. Other standouts on the set include the plodding, ? ber-riff pyrotechnics of “Heavy Metal: The Black and the Silver,” and the Mott the Hoople- and Queen-influenced glammed up roots rock of “Joan Crawford.” The terrifying images of desecration and apocalyptic war in “Veteran of Psychic Wars,” with words by Moorcock, feature huge synth lines, dual leads by Dharma and Eric Bloom — as well as a tom-tom orgy from Albert Bouchard — offered a new pathway through the eternal night of the Cult’s best work. Fire of Unknown Origin has aged well, and deserves to be remastered in the 21st century. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi

Heavy Left Handed and Candid [Video/DVD]

$19.99

There are few death metal acts in the early 21st century as theatrically minded and over the top as England’s Cradle of Filth, as proven on the band’s 2001 home video/DVD release, Heavy Left Handed and Candid. Specializing in the whole horror/satanic shtick that’s been seen many times before (yes, the same approach that Alice Cooper forged all the way back in the early ’70s, and subsequently explored by Kiss, W.A.S.P., Marilyn Manson, etc.), Cradle of Filth thrashes out 11 tracks live at Nottingham’s Rock City on April 14, 2001. Also included is a pair of rarely seen bonus promo videos for the tracks “Born in a Burial Gown” and “Scorched Earth Erotica.” ~ Greg Prato, Rovi

 Last Action Hero [Original Soundtrack]

Last Action Hero [Original Soundtrack]

$9.99

Forget the film that inspired it. Even if it’s tied to one of the era’s biggest Hollywood flops, the Last Action Hero soundtrack has significant lasting value, serving as a wonderful snapshot of the turbulent early-’90s hard rock scene. It pools together previously unreleased songs from enduring hard rock favorites (AC/DC, Def Leppard, and Aerosmith) as well as mainstream metal thrashers (Megadeth, Anthrax), alt-metal fringe dwellers (Queensr???che, Fishbone), new-breed prospects (Alice in Chains, Cypress Hill), and the customary Hollywood soundtrack schlock (Tesla’s over the top title theme and Michael Kamen’s album-closing symphonic metal [anti]climax). It’s a mixed bag, for sure, but such was the nature of hard rock during the early ’90s as both alt-rock and gangsta rap rocked the boat and ultimately siphoned off much of the fan base. In addition to standing as an interesting microcosm for the greater hard rock scene and all of its turbulence, Last Action Hero thankfully features quite a few above-average inclusions. Most notably, the pair of Alice in Chains songs (“What the Hell Have I,” “Little Bitter”) are on a par with those featured on the band’s recent (and magnificent) Dirt album. Elsewhere, the ageless AC/DC and Def Leppard prove yet again that they are able to continually revive themselves year after year, with a big, loud anthem (“Big Gun”) and a sappy, singalong acoustic ballad (“Two Steps Behind”), respectively. Less impressively, former thrash kingpins Megadeth (“Angry Again”) and Anthrax (“Poison My Eyes”) make their bids for Metallica-style crossover success by dumbing down their once cutting-edge styles. Then there’s the odd yet welcome late-album inclusion of Cypress Hill (“Cock the Hammer”) and Fishbone (“Swim”) efforts, clear evidence that Lollapalooza and its alternative-minded patrons had indeed begun to make their mark on the American hard rock scene by summer 1993. Scattershot times warrant scattershot portraits, and Last …

 Live Fillmore West: San Francisco

Live Fillmore West: San Francisco

$18.98

In 1970, Mott the Hoople embarked on a U.S. tour, closing out their excursion that July with a four-night extravaganza at the Fillmore West, second on the bill to a headlining Quicksilver Messenger Service. It wasn’t the band’s first trip to the States, but now they were promoting their debut album, which had hit the shops the previous fall in the U.K., but was held back in the U.S. for a spring release. The bulk of Live Fillmore West: San Francisco is drawn from these shows, and although the sound quality is far from pristine, still the CD captures the ferocity of the Hoople’s performance. The CD picks up the gig with their incendiary cover of “Darkness Darkness,” one of a pair of non-album covers they performed live that night, along with a storming take on “Keep- a-Knocking.” Mott’s eponymous album featured a few covers as well, and onstage they let loose with a ferocious “You Really Got Me,” while their own “Rock’n'Roll Queen” is positively thunderous. Their version of “At the Crossroads” is chiming British blues at its best, while “Thunderbuck Ram,” one of two tasters for their second album, leaves the blues behind, as the Hoople stake a banner in the hard rock/metal realm. It’s pretty evident that Mott must have blown Quicksilver straight off the stage. Counter-intuitively though, the disc opens with four numbers recorded live at the Fillmore West the following year (most likely because of their superior sound quality), kicking off with a glorious “Angel of Eighth Avenue.” Here Mott sounds much freer, at times even a bit ramshackle, but absolutely exhilarating. And if all that wasn’t enough, the disc finishes with a previously unreleased demo of “The Wreck of the Liberty Belle,” recorded circa late 1969/early 1970 with Chris Kimsey. Although never brought to final fruition, this instrumental still boasts a surprisingly savage power even in this raw state. ~ Jo-Ann Greene, Rovi

Metal God Essentials, Vol. 1 [Bonus DVD]

Metal God Essentials, Vol. 1 [Bonus DVD]

$14.98

While he’ll always be known first and foremost as the prototypical heavy metal frontman of Judas Priest, Rob Halford spent much of the ’90s away from the group (before returning in the early 21st century). During this time, the singer certainly didn’t go silent, as he launched several projects — the Pantera-esque Fight, the Nine Inch Nails-esque Two, and ultimately, a return to his Priest roots, Halford. The 16-track compilation, 2007′s Metal God Essentials, Vol. 1, contains highlights from two of these three Halford-led groups (Two is the only project nowhere to be found here). But this is not a straight-ahead best-of set, as the majority of the tracks from the Fight era (“Into the Pit,” “Nailed to the Gun,” “War of Words”) are demo recordings. And while another demo, “Silent Screams,” shows the metal god in a tranquil mood, the majority of the tracks here are good old-fashioned, speaker melting metal, as evidenced by the inclusion of such ditties as “Made in Hell,” “Golgotha,” and “Locked and Loaded.” Also included is a pair of all-new Halford tracks, “Forgotten Generation” and “Drop Out” (which serves as a sneak peak of the forthcoming Halford release). [A bonus DVD version was also released.] ~ Greg Prato, Rovi

 Overkill [Bonus Tracks]

Overkill [Bonus Tracks]

$12.99

Mot? rhead’s landmark second album, Overkill, marked a major leap forward for the band, and it remains one of their all-time best, without question. In fact, some fans consider it their single best, topping even Ace of Spaces. It’s a ferocious album, for sure, perfectly showcasing Mot? rhead’s trademark style of no holds barred proto-thrash — a kind of punk-inflected heavy metal style that is sloppy and raw yet forceful and in your face. Mot? rhead, the band’s self-titled debut from 1977, had been rush-recorded, and its stripped-down, super-raw sound wasn’t all that impressive, at least not relative to what would follow. Overkill is what followed, recorded in December 1978 and January 1979, and released not long thereafter. The band’s sound is fully formed here, and it totally explodes right off the bat on the five-minute title track. A number of Mot? rhead standards follow, among them “Stay Clean” and “No Class.” Produced by Jimmy Miller, who had helmed a number of classic Rolling Stones albums (Beggars Banquet, Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main St., Goats Head Soup), Overkill sounds wonderful, especially on the numerous remastered editions of this album. The band’s classic lineup — Lemmy (bass and vocals), “Fast” Eddie Clarke (guitar), and “Philthy Animal” Taylor (drums) — is well in place here, and they seem eager to rip loose wildly on every single song. This, in addition to the solid track listing and Miller’s production, makes Overkill a perfect Mot? rhead album. Several great ones would follow, of course, but Overkill was the first of the great ones, and quite possibly the greatest of all. [The various single-disc reissues of Overkill append five bonus tracks: a pair of B-sides ("Too Late, Too Late" and "Like a Nightmare"), an A-side ("Louie, Louie"), and a pair of alternate versions ("Tear Ya Down" and "Louie, Louie").] ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi

 Speak of the Devil

Speak of the Devil

$11.99

Immediately following the death of Ozzy Osbourne’s dear friend and collaborator Randy Rhoads, tentative plans for a live recording from the Rhoads tours were quickly scrapped. Instead, the deeply troubled singer opted for a pair of one-offs at New York City’s Ritz club. No one had any idea what Ozzy would do, and an evening of Black Sabbath covers was the furthest thing from everyone’s mind. Ozzy had been portrayed as a washed-up, vocally challenged frontman by his ex-bandmates, and the perception was that Ozzy could no longer sing the original Sabbath material. Hiring metal producer Max Norman to man the boards, Ozzy enlisted Night Ranger guitarist Brad Gillis to play the role of Tony Iommi for the evening. The show itself took on an ominous tone with a chair visibly propped up on the edge of the stage; upon it rested a spiral notebook containing the lyrics to all the Sabbath songs of the evening, from which Ozzy read throughout the show. Still, Speak of the Devil is strengthened by the classic combo of Rudy Sarzo and Tommy Aldridge on bass and drums, undoubtedly one the best rhythm sections of Ozzy’s solo career. And immediately, it becomes obvious that Brad Gillis was the right man for the gig. Playing Iommi to a tee, Gillis effortlessly leads the band through some of the best of the Sabbath catalog; Speak of the Devil ends up solid throughout, if somewhat unremarkable at times. Listening to the remastered version, there’s no doubt that the vocals feature some heavily doctored patch-ups, but regardless, Ozzy proved his point to his ex-bandmates. Following the recording, due to the uncertainty surrounding the Ozzy camp, Gillis would jump ship and rejoin the ranks of Night Ranger. ~ John Franck, Rovi

With all of the comparisons to Southern rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, Charlie Daniels, the Outlaws, and so forth, this solid, hardcore rockin’ honky tonk duo and their amazing band is an entity unto themselves. Eddie Montgomery (brother of John Michael) and Troy Gentry are equal parts country music that comes from Merle Haggard, George Jones, Wynn Stewart, Dwight Yoakam, and even Hank Williams. At the same time, they play a scorching brand of rock & roll that has everything to do with the aforementioned heroes of the 1970s and the Allmans too because the blues are at the root of everything they do. This is an auspicious debut album, one that not only shows promise, but delivers the goods in the form of great songs written by a host of Nash Vegas’ and Texas’ finest — if unknown new breed — and absolutely tremendous performances. Check the hard rocking opener, “Hillbilly Shoes,” with its flatpicking guitar intro supplanted by overdriven fiddles and screaming dual lead guitars. And “Trying to Survive” with its guitar, pedal steel, and piano fills is reminiscent of the feel, not sound, of Tucker’s “Can’t You See.” It’s easy to embrace Tim McGraw and a host of others who use rock & roll as way of framing their country music, but Montgomery Gentry don’t use rock; they are a rock band who make country music, real country music. Check the gorgeous chorus on “Lonely and Gone” that is commenced with a heavy metal guitar intro only to become a gorgeous mid-tempo ballad. Other tracks, like “Self-Made Man,” are pure modern honky tonk. Vocally, the harmonies between this pair are a perfect balance of beer and fine whiskey. Montgomery’s rough hewn baritone and Gentry’s almost unreal range and trademark phrasing make something highly original in the face of so much cookie-cutter Nash Vegas big-hatted crap. The funky blues on “Daddy Won’t Sell the Farm” with those fiddles and pedal steels wrapping around a greasy keyboard line lead into a rebel South…

 Traynor K4 Keyboard Amplifier

Traynor K4 Keyboard Amplifier

$1239.29

K4 The North American built Traynor K4 is an advanced, extremely versatile stereo keyboard amplifier capable of delivering an extremely wide and varied tone pallet. The flagship keyboard amplifier in the line, the K4 uses three separate integrated amplifiers to deliver true stereo separation of the mid and high frequencies with the added bottom end of a mono-summed 200-watt 12-inch woofer. This variation of the 2.1 speaker configuration allows a stereo image to be felt on stage, inspiring the player with full stereo feel from a single 300 watt combo amplifier. A single 200 watt 12-inch woofer delivers solid low end while a pair of 50 watt amplifiers drive pairs of 4.5-inch midrange drivers and 2.5-inch compression drivers that deliver high and mid frequency program. Designed to be one of the most versatile amplifiers in the line Traynor line, K4 offers a choice of tube or solid-state signal path, selectable from a singe switch on the front panel. The tube circuit uses a pair of 12AX7A tubes capable of delivering warmth and to smoothness to the often-sterile sound of modern digital keyboards. When used with a small amount of drive, the tube section can create natural tube compression and recreate the subtle dynamics that can’t be properly emulated by most of today’s digital workstations. A solid-state signal path can be selected; bypassing the tube circuitry altogether for those times when the cleanest signal path possible is preferred. The K4′s channel one input also features a foot switchable Tube Overdrive control allowing the player to dial in any amount of tube, from subtle warm grit to a full on overdrive. Versatile inputs allow two stereo sources to be connected to Channel One, while an additional stereo source or a microphone can be connected to Channel Two. Channel Three can handle an additional stereo keyboard or any other source including MP3 player or laptop where additional EQ control isn’t required. Channels One and Two have separate 3-band EQs for tone shaping, while Channel One offers an additional 5-position voicing circuit. A fourth post DI out stereo input channel with its own gain control can be found on the rear panel of the K4. This versatile fourth channel allows an external click track, drum monitor mix or monitor feed from the FOH or monitor console to be played through the K4 without sending that signal back through the DI outputs. This allows the K4 to act as its own powered monitor, without everything you hear on stage being part of the audience’s mix. Built for the rigors of the road, the Traynor K4 is manufactured using a solid, void-free plywood cabinet construction and an all-metal grille to protect the high quality speaker components.

While most of the bands fusing heavy metal and punk rock in the mid-2000s draw inspiration from their ’90s substrains, death metal and emo, respectively, Oakland’s Watch Them Die look further into the past (though closer to home), toward thrash and hardcore, for the basic elements of their sound — ironically coming off more groundbreaking in the process. Is that possible? Possible or not, they make for a refreshingly combustible combination on the band’s second album, 2005′s Bastard Son; possibly because instead of wasting their breath on emo-like sincerity and “I’m so sensitive” lyrics, Watch Them Die seem bent on actively changing the world, hardcore style, even if they have to annihilate it first! This they almost do with the opening tandem of the title track (a manic thrasher laced with dual-guitar harmonies and black metal-derived horn-like guitar blasts) and “Onslaught” (featuring a textbook hardcore intro and punky bass-driven sections), as well as ensuing brutalizing assaults such as “Belial’s Path” and “Born to Suffer.” Though not quite as irresistible as the above, extended cuts like “Throne of Lies” and “Horizon” do experiment with slower tempos within the absolute violence, and while “Early Mourning” successfully infuses Eastern melodies into the mix, “Under Flames” comes to a surprisingly mellow, female voice-enhanced conclusion, after terrorizing the neighborhood like the others. Curiously, before wrapping up with yet another frantic tear in bonus track “Armageddon” (a Bathory cover) Bastard Son uncorks a pair of seven-minute epics of identical length, and containing assorted combinations from all of the above varieties. A fine effort all around from Watch Them Die. [This version of the release contains an additional CD of bonus material.] ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi

~ Tracie Cooper, All Movie Guide

When the Descendents finally ended their first run as an on-again/off-again pop-punk band in 1987, a pair of live albums (Liveage and Hallraker) was compiled by their only constant member, founding drummer Bill Stevenson. As Stevenson writes in the liner notes for Hallraker, Liveage was meant to “serve as a sort of ‘greatest-hits’ album,” but too many tracks were left out, so a second LP was released, “at the request of fans.” The albums do provide a fine end cap to the first part of the band’s legacy, even though several early songs (“Bikeage,” “Marriage,” “Jean Is Dead,” etc.) are unforgivably absent. The album was assembled from live tracks recorded at two shows: one in July 1987 at First Avenue in Minneapolis, and the other in April 1987 at Berkeley Square in Berkeley. This was during the “All” and “Final” tours, as described by Stevenson, before the band switched singers to Dave Smalley to become ALL, and Milo Aukerman wandered off to Ph.D.-land. The recordings here do well to capture the vitality and frenzy of the band in action, even as they were in the final throes of existence. Among the songs that are included, “Pep Talk,” “Cheer,” and “My World” are the highlights. Other tracks like “Iceman” and “Jealous of the World” demonstrate the metal edge that developed in the band’s sound in their last couple of studio albums. The Descendents reunited in 1996 with Everything Sucks, featuring the same lineup (for once!) and proving that they hadn’t lost a step. For their first incarnation (as it was), Hallraker provides a good document after the fact. ~ Jeremy Salmon, Rovi

USED: Live at Wembley Stadium [Bonus Tracks]

$11.99

The posthumously released two-disc Live at Wembley ’86 proves once and for all that Queen was a superior live band, and like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and others, had far too many hits to fit into a two-hour show. Recorded in the band’s native England at the gigantic Wembley Stadium on the A Kind of Magic tour, the group was at their peak of popularity back home. This would unfortunately turn out to be the band’s last tour, and it showed the group including old rock & roll covers, classics, then-current songs, improv, and overlooked album tracks. Queen opens up the show with the near-heavy-metal roar of “One Vision,” and adds lively renditions of the well-known “Tie Your Mother Down,” the David Bowie collaboration “Under Pressure,” and the band’s very first hit, “Seven Seas of Rhye.” Also included on disc one is the early, forgotten show-closer “In the Lap of the Gods,” the beautiful (and sadly prophetic) ballad “Who Wants to Live Forever,” and a downright funky version of “Another One Bites the Dust.” Disc two opens with a pair of acoustic numbers, including the perennial crowd fave “Love of My Life,” but soon switches gears to some good old rock & roll covers. Spirited and fun versions of “You’re So Square (Baby I Don’t Care)” and “Tutti Frutti” expose Queen’s roots, while the band’s own “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” fits in perfectly with all the ’50s hoopla. Casual fans will recognize “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Radio Ga Ga,” and “We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions.” Although most Queen fans prefer the unfairly criticized 1979 concert album Live Killers, Live at Wembley ’86 does a good job of balancing the well-known for the uninitiated and the lesser-known for the hard-core fan. (Note: Live at Wembley ’86 should not to be confused with the double album/single-disc Live Magic, which was released in 1986 in England and 1996 in the U.S.) [The 2003 edition of Live at Wembley ’86 adds four songs — “A Kind of Magic,” “Another…

All things considered, Finnish heavy metal hitmakers Nightwish rebounded remarkably well from their traumatic divorce proceedings with lead singer Tarja Turunen, moving relatively quickly, once the dust had settled, to replace her with accomplished Swedish siren Anette Olzon (multiple auditions notwithstanding) before carrying on with their career, as usual, on 2007′s Dark Passion Play. Another multi-platinum seller in their homeland, yielding a pair of number one singles, the record was also eagerly embraced by the band’s supportive global fan base and led to the most ambitious world tour of Nightwish’s career, then, perhaps not surprisingly, 2009′s Made in Hong Kong (And Various Other Places) live album. To be clear, though, this was actually a mini-live album, containing just eight in-concert recordings of songs from Dark Passion Play, which were then rounded out with two B-sides and a demo — also from that same LP. Needless to say, some observers may find it a bit odd that Nightwish would choose not to touch any of their legacy material from the Turunen era here, since, despite having a far less operatic, more traditionally rock-bred voice, Olzon handled those old hits very capably throughout the tour. But if the remaining members of Nightwish have done anything consistently throughout this transition, it’s been to look forward, never backwards; so in that sense, the five-piece’s meticulous (if not exactly surprise-filled) renditions of new fan favorites such as “Bye Bye Beautiful,” “Amaranth,” and “The Islander” — not to mention all 14 minutes of leader Tuomas Holopainen’s latest micro-symphony, “The Poet and the Pendulum” — offer a suitable document of this maiden tour with Olzon out front. As for those aforementioned B-sides, “Escapist” is a hooky power metal anthem that could have easily made the album, and “While Your Lips Are Still Red” is another of bassist Marco Hietala’s acoustic folk ditties, after which comes the demo for Dark Passio…

Bruce Dickinson’s first solo release on his newly constructed label Air Raid Records, entitled Scream for Me Brazil, is a near 70-minute-long disc of live material. Recorded on the tour in support of his acclaimed Chemical Wedding album, it was the first solo Bruce Dickinson tour to include his old Iron Maiden bandmember Adrian Smith on guitar. Even with a pair of ex-Maiden cohorts reunited, Scream for Me Brazil does not contain a single selection from their former band’s catalog (not even a track from Dickinson’s solo debut, 1990′s Tattooed Millionaire, for that matter). But the album features consistent, inspired performances — look no further than the opening track, “Trumpets of Jericho.” Also featured is the epic “Tears of the Dragon,” the title track from Chemical Wedding, “Killing Floor” (no relation to the old blues standard popularized by Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin), “Accident of Birth,” and “The Tower.” Although both Dickinson and Smith returned to Maiden shortly after the tour wrapped up, Dickinson kept his solo career going simultaneously. Fans everywhere of one of metal’s all-time great singers will enjoy Scream for Me Brazil. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi

Slayer’s Undisputed Attitude feels more like a stopgap than an actual Slayer record. Rather than another set of blasting, disturbing originals like 1994′s Divine Intervention or 1995′s Serenity in Murder EP, this album is a collection of covers. Containing 14 tracks, the band covers everyone from Minor Threat to T.S.O.L., from D.I. to Iggy Pop. Given Slayer’s Huntington Beach, CA, homeland, the hardcore roots are plain enough. But HB is also a big metal town, and these cats as youngsters were exposed to everything from Mot? rhead to Black Sabbath and the early L.A. metal scene. True to their course, however, they’ve never sounded like anyone but themselves. Even on a collection of covers (with a pair of originals thrown in to boot), the Slayer imprint is unmistakable, and while taking a breather from fresh ideas on their own projects, this disc sounds like the bandmembers were having a blast if not exactly breaking new ground. All but two of these cuts are less than three minutes long, with a number of them come in under two — in keeping with true hardcore fashion. Even on the completely over-the-rail covers of Minor Threat’s “Filler/I Don’t Want To Hear It” and “Guilty of Being White,” the guitar breaks are unmistakably their own. Paul Bostaph’s thin drumming (as opposed to founding drummer Dave Lombardo’s) is actually more suited to this material. The cover of the Stooges’ “I Wanna Be Your Dog” contains the title “I’m Gonna Be Your God” — it wouldn’t do for Slayer to be thought of in any way submissive, would it? (Although none would have cared but them, which tells you where they’re coming from.) The band basically improves upon T.S.O.L.’s “Spiritual Law,” and the long reach into D.I.’s catalog for no less than five cuts — four of them done in a pair of medleys — offers a few more examples of where Slayer come from. They are extremely heavy and extremely brief cuts, but pack a wallop. For those looking toward Slayer’s more direct roots, there are…

 Young Buckethead, Vol. 1

Young Buckethead, Vol. 1

$14.95

The Deli Creeps had only been performing for a couple months when this footage was shot in 1990, but they were clearly on their own path. The decidedly uninhibited Maximum Bob’s disturbed ramblings combined with Buckethead’s otherworldly presence put this band into the realm of performance art metal. Buckethead shows unbelievable facility on guitar, playing much of the set with no strap on his guitar (no mean feat). Even at this early date, he was pulling out oddball (for the metal scene, at any rate) tidbits like “When You Wish Upon a Star,” almost certainly further confusing the crowd. The segment from the soundcheck earlier that day shows Buckethead without the mask (!), although he’s VERY conscious about not wanting to be seen without it (his face is deliberately blurred when shown). The “Buckethead in the Basement” segment has Buckethead playing some great horror-flick soundtrack music, moving through all the creepy keyboard presets as Jas Obrecht raves insanely from behind his milk-crate prison. But the most amazing segment is saved for last. It’s a “Buckethead” family barbecue, and marks the first time Buckethead performed as Buckethead for most of his family. He walks into the backyard wearing a pair of shorts, mask and bucket donned, carrying his guitar and a very small amplifier and sits down. There’s some chuckling from the family, and someone asks “Brian” a question. It’s then revealed to the family (by Jas) that Buckethead doesn’t talk. Then Buckethead turns in what has got to be one of the most incredible, jaw-dropping displays of guitar virtuosity ever performed. Over the course of about 12 minutes, he goes from metal licks to classical style to Travis picking to flat-picking to tapping to clawhammer banjo style to funk slap and pop and just about anything in between. There’s even a great Star Wars medley in there. It’s truly nothing short of amazing and worth the price of admission by itself. ~ Sean Westergaard, Rovi
