Framed Clear Bifocal
I just had a vision test and need some help understanding what it all means…
I just got back from the eye doctor. They said I had “astigmatism” in both eyes, but I don’t think it was completely horrible. She also said something about football shaped something or another. I just shelled out the money for the glasses and lenses, and now I’m not really sure what purpose the glasses will serve. I seem to have a difficult time reading road signs while driving at night, but the person who helped me pick out a frame said that I’ll just be wearing glasses when I’m studying or needing to see stuff up close. The eye doctor back in the room had me try several different lenses and then had me try bifocal lenses on top of the ones that I made things the most clear. The bifocals didn’t really help out that much at all, so she said I would be able to go without them… now I’m just confused about what purpose these glasses are going to serve and when I’m going to be needing them.
Dang! Yahoo was on a “breather” for half an hour!!…. I came from your last question, and you asked the right person. I’m a Board Certified Optician, believe it or not! Astigmatism is a very, very commont condition (nothing to worry about the least bit.) Your cornea is the outer layer of clear membraine on the front of the eye that covers the iris (the colored part) and the pupil ( the black circle, or hole leading to the ritina). It’s where you would place a contact lens. When you have astigmatism, your cornea is not perfectly round, but is a bit ‘football shaped’ like the doctor said. This causes distorted vision. Not near-sited, or far-sighted, per say, but images may appear elongated and misshapen. Depending on the severity of the astigmatism, it can cause varying degrees of vision distortion.
When you mention that you have trouble seeing at night, do you mean WITH the glasses? If so, you definitely need to go back and complain. Seeing your best driving at night is a higher priority than reading or computer use! Go back and get an explanation. It also sounds like a somewhat outdated method the way you describe how they ” put bifocal lenses on top of the glasses they made” if I’m understanding that right. Be assertive. Glasses have an 80% mark-up, they make a killing off them! If they have to remake them, the lab doesn’t charge them, so don’t feel guilty. It’s just like the rest of the healthcare field. A lot goes on under the table, believe me. Make sure you’re completely satisfied.Good Luck.
